Homeowners Insurance: Do I File A Claim?

Filing a homeowners claim is not like an auto insurance claim. Auto claims tend to happen more frequently and cover things differently than Homeowners policies, and the terms and coverages are different. house insurance claim form

First, deductibles with homeowners policies are higher. They usually run $1,000 or $2,500. The higher the deductible, the less the cost of the policy. Insurance for homes is for big losses. For example, if you have damage that costs $500-$1000 to repair, it is not worth filing a claim, which is why it is very important to get an estimate of damages before attempting to file a claim. If you have questions, give your local agent a call. Do not call a one eight hundred number - you will not get to speak to an actual agent and a claim may be filed automatically (even if the damage is less than your deductible, it will not be covered and will count as an occurrence). An occurrence shows that you file claims frequently and is a red flag for insurance companies. So when in doubt, call your local agent or a restoration company and get an estimate of the damage you have. If the damage is much larger than your deductible, you can go ahead and file a claim. Great insurance agents can give you great advice. They are NOT adjusters but have been in the field long enough to have an idea of what your next steps should be. They may not know the answer, but it never hurts to ask. If you need a local agent, All About Insurance has 11 offices in the triangle area. We are able to complete all transactions by phone - so we are able to write insurance throughout North Carolina!
