Did you hear that your friend’s cousin’s coworker’s daughter paid X amount of dollars for her auto insurance because of X reason? It’s surprising how often false information spreads in this manner. But when it comes to your own auto insurance, you should know exactly what you’re paying for—not what you think you’re paying for because a friend of friend said so. We want you to be well informed, so we’ve compiled a list of three common auto insurance myths and busted them for you.

The belongings I keep in my car are covered
Many people think that their MP3 players, GPS devices, laptops and other items will be covered in the event that a car accident damages them. However, this is not the case. Auto insurance covers your car. Period. But don’t fret! Your personal belongings are generally covered under your homeowners or renters insurance policy.

I have to pay more for my red car
Though it’s true that many drivers who choose red cars are known to drive fast, insurance companies consider many factors to be much more important to premium calculation than the color of your vehicle. These include the car’s make and model, engine size, your age, your driving record and the location where your car is stored (garage vs. street). But, of course, if you drive recklessly in your red car, you can absolutely expect to pay more for insurance.

No one wants to steal my old car
New cars may have a lot of great technological gadgetry, but carjackers still prefer older models from the 80s and 90s. Why? These models are 1) easier to break into and steal, and 2) most of these cars can be sold to chop shops for their interchangeable parts. The most common stolen cars include modest sedans, with Honda Civics and Toyota Camrys ranking high on the list.
